It was on 25 July, in 1974 that Barbara Jordan, a Democrat from Texas, spoke to her fellow members of the House Judiciary Committee as they debated the Impeachment of President Nixon.
Jordan began her memorable address by telling her colleagues that her belief in the constitution was “whole, complete, it is total”, and also noted, in reference to her race, that she guessed Thomas Jefferson simply forgot to include her in the preamble, “We the people”.
