17 March is ‘St. Patrick’s Day’, an occasion on which Irish throughout the United States will celebrate their identity. The US was not always so welcoming however to those who arrived from the ‘Emerald Isle’. This 1867 cartoon by Thomas Nast depicts his view of St. Patrick’s Day. You will note that the Irish celebrants have simian features and clearly exalt at their power to overwhelm the police in a rum soaked riot.
